By removing the administrative "noise," we allow operators to focus on what they do best: delivering unforgettable, sustainable experiences on the water. Conclusion We’re heading into the new year inspired, recharged, and exactly where we belong: on the water. Warm wishes and Happy Holidays, The MOXSEA Team
- The Hidden Reason Most Boat Clubs Struggle With Profitability (How to Stop It This Quarter)
Running a busy boat club does not necessarily mean running a profitable one. Complicated, disconnected systems are costing the boat club three revenues. Across Europe and beyond, many boat clubs work harder every season, yet profit never truly improves. After working with boat clubs, marinas, and fleet operators, one pattern appears repeatedly: most clubs struggle to turn strong demand into real profit, not because boating isn't popular, but because their operations don’t scale. Clubs are busy. Boats are booked. Members are interested. Yet, profitability remains fragile and often disappointing. The problem is rarely demand; it’s what happens behind the scenes. This article explains why boat clubs lose money, where the hidden leaks are, and what you can realistically fix this quarter, without hiring more staff or buying more boats. Did You Actually Earn Money in 2025? Let’s start with an uncomfortable but vital question: did your boat club actually make a profit in 2025? Not: “We were busy.” “The boats were booked.” “Members were happy.” But real profit. The money left over after the season ended and all expenses were settled. Many clubs finish the year exhausted, not profitable. They face more bookings, more calls, and more admin, but the same bottom line. If nothing changes , the new year will bring the same problems , just with more pressure . A new season does not fix broken systems . Why Most Boat Clubs Lose Money 1. Manual Operations Destroy Profit Margins Spreadsheets, emails, WhatsApp messages, and paper notes may seem manageable individually. Together, they create chaos. Manual operations lead to double bookings , missed reservations , staff confusion , and a lack of a "single source of truth". Consider the math: 10 hours of admin per week equals 520 hours per year. That isn't just "part of the job"; that is lost revenue. The Fix: List every recurring manual task. If it happens weekly , it must be centralised or automated . Hours Spent on Manual Work vs. Centralised Tasks 2. Poor Fleet Management Leaks Revenue Most clubs believe they manage their fleet well until something goes wrong. Typical issues include boats departing with unresolved maintenance issues , staff being unaware of real-time availability, and verbal reports being forgotten . One unavailable boat on a busy weekend can cost more than the annual price of a proper management system . The Fix: Centralise fleet status and issue tracking so every team member sees the same information in real time . The "Silent Killers" of Profit for Boat Clubs. 3. Idle Boats are Silent Profit Killers A club can feel "busy" and still lose money . Without clear data, many owners don’t know which boats are underused , which days are consistently underbooked , or which members cancel most often . The Fix: Track real utilisation per boat and per day . If you can’t see these metrics in seconds , you are guessing, not managing. 4. Manual Payments Stifle Cash Flow Manual payments are more than an inconvenience ; they are a financial risk . They lead to late payments, time wasted chasing invoices, and unclear financial visibility. If you don't know who has paid at any given moment, you don’t control your business. The Fix: Link bookings and payments in one system so cash flow is predictable and transparent . Friction Creates Churn, Not Complaints Members today expect a "premium" experience, which includes digital convenience. They are used to booking travel and making payments in seconds from their phones. When booking a boat requires back-and-forth emails or waiting for confirmations, it creates friction. Members rarely complain about friction; they just leave. They’ll say, "I didn't use it enough this year," but the reality is that the hassle outweighed the reward. Frictionless booking is no longer a "nice-to-have"—it is a retention tool and a revenue protector. The Risk of Doing Nothing Clubs that ignore the shift toward digitalisation don’t lose members overnight. They slowly lose their best members, the ones who value their time and expect convenience . Once a member leaves because the experience feels outdated , they rarely return . Furthermore, growth without structure leads to burnout. If adding more members feels stressful rather than rewarding, your system is the bottleneck. The Good News: This is Fixable Profitable boat clubs don’t necessarily work longer hours or buy more boats. They: Centralise operations. Reduce administrative drag. Improve visibility through data. Build systems that scale. They stop running the club like a hobby and start running it like a high-performance business. This is the Year to Start Earning As the new season approaches, ask yourself: Can my club grow by 30% without breaking? Do I know which boats actually generate the most profit? Do I control my operations, or do they control me? If the answer is "no" , the cost is already hitting your bank account. Want to stop losing money this season? See how modern boat clubs reduce admin and protect cash flow without adding complexity. 👉 Book a 15-minute walkthrough and see what can be fixed this quarter.

- How to Start a Boat Club: 10 Essential Steps for Success
Starting a boat club can be one of the most rewarding ventures in the marine industry today. With boating participation on the rise and more people seeking flexible access to the water rather than full ownership , boat clubs are shaping the future of boating. Whether you’re a marina owner, boat manufacturer, entrepreneur , or simply passionate about life on the water, here are the 10 most important steps to launch your own successful boat club, and how MOXSEA can support you on the journey. Want to save this for later? Download Your PDF Here 10 Essential Steps for Success 1. Define Your Vision & Business Model Freedom Boat Club, Carefree Boat Club, and similar models have proven how successful the shared boating concept can be, and MOXSEA helps entrepreneurs build their own version of that success. 2. Understand Your Market and Clients Research your audience. Who are your potential members? What types of boats are in demand? Where are the gaps in your local marina network? Use online forums, surveys, and MOXSEA’s market insights to evaluate opportunity size, trends, and competition. 3. Create a Financial Plan List your startup costs: boats, insurance, dock fees, staff, maintenance, marketing, and software, as well as recurring expenses. Plan membership pricing tiers and projected revenue. A detailed business plan is essential to attract partners and secure funding. 4. Choose the Right Location Your club’s location can make or break its success. Choose marinas with good access, fuel availability, parking, and amenities. Also, check local regulations and seasonality; coastal vs. inland waters require different approaches. 5. Build Your Fleet Start small and scalable; even two to five boats are enough to launch. Focus on safety, reliability, and maintenance efficiency from day one. 6. Set Up Membership Structures Define how members will join and use boats: unlimited access tiers, pay-per-use, or shared-ownership models. Be transparent about booking rules, member limits, and cancellation policies. 7. Get Insured & Stay Compliant Work with marine insurance specialists to cover liability, hull damage, and member usage. Ensure compliance with maritime authorities and safety standards in your region. ⚠️ In some countries, you’ll also need specific legal certifications or licences, such as a charter or commercial operator’s licence, before offering paid or shared boat access. MOXSEA’s consultants can help you navigate these requirements to ensure your club operates safely and legally. 8. Choose the Right Technology Modern boat clubs rely on smart systems to stay organised. Use MOXSEA’s all-in-one platform to manage reservations, maintenance, billing, and member communication seamlessly. With the user-friendly MOXSEA app, clubs can also build a stronger community by connecting members directly, encouraging interaction, sharing experiences, and growing engagement both online and on the water. 9. Market Your Club Build an online presence: website, social media, and Google My Business. Host demo days or local events to introduce people to your fleet. Encourage word-of-mouth referrals; your members are your best ambassadors. 10. Build Community & Retain Members A thriving boat club is built on strong relationships. Offer exclusive events: after-work boating, breakfast clubs, fishing tournaments, or training sessions. Use the MOXSEA app to foster that sense of belonging; members can share trips, connect with other boaters, and stay engaged year-round. - Southampton Boat Show: How Digitalization is Shaping the Future of Boating
Panel discussion at Southampton International Boat Show 2025. Last week at the Southampton International Boat Show , Henrietta from MOXSEA had the privilege of both pitching and participating in a forward-looking panel discussion about the future of the leisure marine industry . The pitch and panel were kindly hosted by Boatfolk and Yachting Ventures . It was an invaluable opportunity to connect with industry leaders and share our vision alongside fellow panelists: Andrew Cowen from ExpeditionZero | Greg Johns from Everyblu | Gregory Edwards from Hooper Quinn . Beyond the panel, the MOXSEA Team had several insightful meetings with leading boat clubs, including Beyonder , Pure Latitude , Lymington Boat Club , RIB Shack Marine , and MEROS . These companies are all at the forefront of the modern boating movement, offering access to a boat fleet via a membership or co-ownership model. It was clear from these discussions that the UK is a global leader in the marine sharing economy, paving the way for a more accessible and flexible future on the water. The conversation at the boat show highlighted some of the most significant shifts happening in the marine industry today, and how we at MOXSEA are right at the heart of them. The Biggest Shift: From Ownership to Digital Access The panel was united; the leisure marine industry is undergoing a major transformation , moving away from traditional, ownership-driven models towards digital, access-driven solutions. Much like the changes we've seen in mobility and travel, boating is now embracing platforms for sharing, subscriptions, and on-demand access. This shift is also being fuelled by the growing focus on sustainability and the need to professionalise operations with modern tools. Where MOXSEA fits in We are a key enabler of this transition , empowering marinas, boat clubs, and entrepreneurs to build lean, digital-first boat club and boat-sharing businesses that meet modern demands. The New Generation of Boaters: Experience Over Ownership A core part of the discussion focused on how younger generations are not engaging with the water in the same way that older generations did before, and how we can attract them moving forward. The consensus was clear: they value flexibility and unique experiences far more than they do traditional boat ownership. They are reluctant to tie up capital in an asset that sits idle for much of the year. Instead, they want frictionless, on-demand access to the water, with an emphasis on sustainable options. Where MOXSEA fits in We understand that younger generations are experience seekers. Our platform makes it possible for them to get on the water with a single click , fulfilling their desire for spontaneous and flexible access without the burdens of ownership. The Evolving Role of Marinas We discussed the critical role marinas play in this changing landscape. They are no longer just parking lots for boats; they are the gateways to the water and must evolve into true experience hubs . Marinas have an opportunity to lead the industry by adopting electrification infrastructure, embracing digital tools, and collaborating with platforms like MOXSEA to make boating more inclusive and flexible for everyone. Where MOXSEA fits in We believe a marina's future lies in becoming an ecosystem enabler , a place where new generations can easily discover boating. We help marinas make that transformation. Investing in a Resilient Marine Ecosystem When asked about where investment should flow, the panel emphasised digital platforms , sustainability technologies , and community-building . Investing in digitalisation is crucial to lowering barriers to entry, reducing friction, and professionalising operators. Similarly, investments in electric fleets and charging infrastructure are essential for a sustainable future. Where MOXSEA fits in Investing in digitalisation pays off across the entire value chain. It makes fleets more efficient, lowers operational costs, and significantly improves the customer experience, ultimately attracting more capital into the boating industry. Hope vs. Fear for the Next Decade The final point of discussion was a look into the next decade . The hope is that boating becomes more accessible , sustainable , and digitally connected , welcoming new generations and growing beyond its traditional base. The fear is that if the industry resists change, it risks shrinking into an exclusive niche, losing relevance, and becoming like an aging, declining sport. Where MOXSEA fits in Our mission is to make boating as accessible as any click-and-go platform. By embracing digital transformation and focusing on the modern boater, we can ensure the industry thrives for years to come. It was an inspiring discussion, and it reinforced our belief that MOXSEA is not just building a product; we are helping to develop the future of boating.
- The Boating Industry's Hidden Treasure: How MOXSEA Academy Is Changing Everything
The core of this story is the untapped potential of the sharing economy in boating. It's not just a business model; it's a "hidden treasure" that offers a path to sustainability , profit , and community . The problem isn't just a lack of know-how; it's the fact that many don't even realise this opportunity exists. Moxsea Call Center: Moxsea , how can we help you? The Future of Boating is Here. So why aren't we building it? Last week, we focused on our learnings from the Cannes Yachting Festival and the paradox we observed: while the industry talks about a shift to the sharing economy, very few are actively building it. The Missing Link: The "Know-How" We know this gap exists because for many, the journey into the sharing economy is challenging. They lack a clear roadmap for success. Running a boat club is a completely different business from selling boats; it requires specialised knowledge for everything from legal compliance and fleet management to member engagement and payments. This is precisely the challenge that has held the industry back, and it's the very reason we built MOXSEA. Moxsea Call Center: Moxsea , how can we help you? At MOXSEA, we know that the right tools and knowledge are the keys to unlocking this opportunity. That's why we created the MOXSEA Academy , our comprehensive educational platform designed to be the essential business blueprint you've been looking for. We built the Academy because we saw firsthand that a great idea isn't enough. You need a proven roadmap to turn that idea into a thriving business. We've distilled years of real-world experience into an actionable program that covers every step of the journey: Strategic Planning: Learn how to create a solid business plan that attracts investors and sets you up for long-term growth. Legal & Operational Confidence: Understand the critical legal and insurance requirements to operate with peace of mind. Effective Marketing: Master the strategies to find and engage your first members and build a loyal community. Scaling Up: Discover how to grow your fleet, manage your finances, and optimize your operations for profitability. The Power of a Full-Stack Solution The real magic happens when you combine the "know-how" of the MOXSEA Academy with the "scale-up" power of our software platform . Our all-in-one app and backend are built specifically for boat clubs and yacht-sharing businesses, automating everything from booking and payments to fleet control and member communication. This integrated solution means you're not just launching a business; you're building a scalable, efficient, and profitable enterprise from day one. - Embracing the Future of Boating through Sharing Economy: Cannes Yachting Festival Takeaways
This week, we visited the Cannes Yachting Festival. This premier event is a showcase of the latest and greatest in the boating world. As a team dedicated to the future of boat sharing , we went with a clear mission: to see how the sharing economy is being embraced by the marine industry's biggest players. It was an eye-opening experience. We were excited to see forward-thinking boat manufacturers like Axopar and De Antonio Yachts leading the way, with their boat club setups run through their dealer networks. We also met with MEROS , who continue their impressive journey in the fractional yacht ownership space, a clear sign that even the premium segment is moving toward more flexible models. These innovators show that the traditional model of boat ownership is evolving. Leading brands are beginning to understand the value of shared access , flexibility , and experience over ownership . Beyond a few innovators, we didn't see any other boat clubs . The major global players, like Freedom Boat Club and the French Wizyboat, were not visibly present with their own stands. We didn't see dealers actively promoting the "sharing economy" as a solution. In a market where boat sales are weakening and dealers are facing a significant inventory glut, this was a startling observation. How can unsold boat inventory be monetized through sharing? Read below Why are dealers not embracing the boat club model? The signs are everywhere. The sharing economy has transformed nearly every other industry, from transportation to hospitality. For many, boat ownership is a significant financial and logistical burden, and a boat club offers the perfect solution: a stress-free, cost-effective way to get on the water. And yet, while so many are talking about this shift and claiming it is the future of boating, still, nothing happens. We believe it comes down to a few key challenges that have traditionally stood in the way: Complexity: Running a boat club is a whole different business from selling boats. It requires specialised tools for managing bookings, memberships, payments, and boat maintenance. The "Ownership" Mindset: For decades, the industry's business model has been built on selling a physical product. Shifting to a service-based model requires a fundamental change in strategy and thinking. Lack of the Right Technology: Without a robust boat club software platform, managing a fleet of boats and a growing roster of members is incredibly difficult and inefficient. This is where the old way of doing things simply can't keep up with the demands of a modern boat club. At MOXSEA, we believe the answer is right in front of us. The sharing economy isn't just a trend; it's the future of boating. It's a way for dealers to unlock a new revenue stream, monetise their unsold inventory, and attract a new generation of boaters who are less interested in ownership and more interested in experience. This is why we're doing more than just building boat club management software . We understand that for many, the journey to a boat club model can seem daunting. That's why MOXSEA is also committed to helping businesses make this critical transition. We offer dedicated consultancy support to guide new and aspiring boat clubs every step of the way—from creating the initial concept and shaping your business model to designing efficient operations and effective member management. We hope this hands-on approach will accelerate the transformation that the industry so urgently needs. Our visit to the Cannes Yachting Festival was a powerful reminder that while some are still waiting, the future of boating is already here. We're proud to be at the forefront of this movement, helping innovators and entrepreneurs build and scale their boat-sharing business with confidence. Let's build the future of boating together.
- Why Boat Sharing Is the Future of Recreational Boating
Welcome to "What’s New" – Powered by MOXSEA Boat club members Welcome to What’s New, your go-to source for trends, news, and expert insights from the fast-growing world of boat clubs and boat-sharing platforms. At MOXSEA, we believe the future of recreational boating is shared, and we’re building the software that powers this shift. So what’s fuelling the rapid rise of boat sharing? Top 6 Reasons Why Boat Sharing Is Booming in 2025 1. Access Over Ownership Today’s boaters prioritise flexibility and convenience. Instead of dealing with boat ownership, maintenance, storage, and insurance, they want to simply book a boat and go. Boat clubs offer exactly that: on-demand boating without the headaches. 2. Rising Costs of Boat Ownership Boat ownership is expensive. Purchase costs, insurance, dockage, servicing, and winter storage all add up. Boat sharing reduces these costs by spreading them across multiple users, making boating more affordable and accessible. 3. Tech-Driven Simplicity Thanks to platforms like MOXSEA, running or joining a boat club is easier than ever. Our white-label boat club software streamlines reservations, payments, member management, and fleet tracking all in one seamless system. Just like booking a ride or vacation rental. 4. Sustainability & the Blue Economy Boat sharing supports environmentally conscious boating. Fewer idle boats, more efficient marina use, and smarter resource sharing contribute to a more sustainable blue economy. 5. Post-Pandemic Lifestyle Shifts The demand for outdoor and small-group leisure experiences has skyrocketed since the pandemic. Many new boaters have stayed in the lifestyle, thanks to the accessibility of club-based boating. 6. Success of Leading Boat Clubs Global players like Freedom Boat Club and Carefree Boat Club, and European players like Wiziboat (France), Pure Latitude (UK), and Boatfolk/Beyonder (UK) have shown that boat sharing scales successfully. Their growth proves this market has long-term potential, and it’s just getting started. Why MOXSEA? MOXSEA is a leading white-label software solution for boat clubs and boat-sharing businesses. We provide an all-in-one platform that makes running a modern, scalable, and user-friendly boat club simple: from the back office to the dock. - A Spontaneous Coffee with MOXSEA CEO: Founder story
Quick coffee chat with the founder of MOXSEA. This one wasn’t planned. I literally stopped Henrietta, our CEO and co-founder, in the corridor for a quick coffee and a brief interview. As an MOXSEA employee, I’ve heard her story many times, but it never fails to inspire. And I thought it was about time we shared it with the rest of you, our amazing community. So Henrietta, thanks for sitting down with me for a coffee. I have heard your story many times, but it is always so inspiring to hear you tell it. I believe it’s also important to share it with our audience. Henrietta: Thanks for kidnapping me in the corridor! Let’s start at the beginning. How did the idea for MOXSEA come to life? Henrietta: My husband Stefan and I, who is also a co-founder of MOXSEA, were running a boat club in Mallorca for several years. We had a fleet of 15 boats and about 80 members. I was working in the back office, handling marketing and sales, finance, and administration. What I struggled with most was the number of different software systems I had to juggle – none of them were synchronised. It was frustrating and costly, and it made scaling the business extremely difficult. When we eventually left that business, Stefan started working as a consultant for a boat manufacturer, helping them build their global boat club. Meanwhile, I found myself alone – the kids had moved out, the dog had passed away, and Stefan was travelling. I was 52 and standing at a crossroads: should I return to my career in global marketing and sales in the pharmaceutical industry, or should I solve the problem I had struggled with for so long? So I wrote the business case for MOXSEA – a white-label, seamless software platform designed specifically for boat clubs and boat-sharing businesses. A system that integrates everything in one place. I pitched the idea to investors, and quite quickly, I secured our first angel investor. That was in December 2022, two and a half years ago. MOXSEA is a white-label platform for boat clubs. Why did you choose that route instead of building your own club again? Henrietta: I saw the demand in the market. The nautical sector has lagged in terms of digitalisation, and since I had experienced a similar transformation in the pharmaceutical industry, I knew the timing was right. I wanted to challenge another outdated sector by developing smart, simple tools that would allow clubs to optimise and grow. Of course, I was scared, but I was also confident. I knew this was the future. What has been the biggest challenge in the journey so far? And what have you learnt from it? Henrietta: One of the biggest challenges was the complexity of developing the software. Early on, I teamed up with my son Zeth, who is also a co-founder, and together we created the architecture for both the app and the backend, including all the mockups. But building something easy to use is actually incredibly hard. There are so many connections to manage. However, the biggest personal challenge has been the loneliness and the self-doubt. The to-do list never ends, and even though I have Stefan and Zeth by my side and a fantastic development team, the weight of responsibility often falls on my shoulders. When the bank account is low and you’re chasing investors to keep the company afloat, it can feel overwhelming. But it’s also made me stronger. MOXSEA is now live with clients. How does it feel seeing it being used out on the water? Henrietta: That’s the part I love! Seeing our clients using MOXSEA and seeing how it supports them in optimising and scaling their business is incredibly rewarding. Even better is the feedback from their members who use the app. That helps validate the product and shows that our clients are offering a modern, efficient experience. And, of course, the feedback we receive helps us continuously improve the software. Sustainability and the blue economy are central to what you do—why is that important to you personally? Henrietta: It’s absolutely core to why I started MOXSEA. I realised quickly that we can’t keep producing boats at the rate we are today. We need a more sustainable way of enjoying the sea. By promoting boat sharing, we not only reduce the number of boats sitting idle, but we also make better use of existing marina space. Boats often sit unused for most of the year, and we can do better than that. What motivates you to keep pushing forward, even on tough days? Henrietta: I focus on our happy clients. I love meeting boat clubs and marinas that understand the future is about sharing. Seeing them use MOXSEA and knowing the software is helping them grow and evolve brings me so much joy. That’s what keeps me going. What is the next step for MOXSEA? Henrietta: Now that we have paying clients and the system is live, the next big step is to scale. To do that, we need to raise a new investment round. My focus right now is on finding the resources to grow the team and prepare for our expansion into the American market. Any final thoughts you’d like to share with the MOXSEA community? Henrietta: Yes. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that innovation doesn’t always come from the biggest players; it comes from people who care deeply about solving real problems. MOXSEA was born from frustration, yes, but also from love. Love for the sea, for entrepreneurship, and for building something that truly matters. "To anyone out there running a boat club or dreaming of starting one. You’re not alone. We built MOXSEA for you. And this is just the beginning. Let’s reshape the future of boating together," says the CEO of MOXSEA, Henrietta.
